The Importance of Posture & Stretching

When patients are hurting, the most common question I get is “how did this happen?”  Often times patients will become symptomatic after doing something as simple as brushing their teeth or sneezing, but that is not how the problem begins. Generally it is just the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

So what are the culprits?

Number 1, posture. Posture is a 24 hour-a-day job; sleeping posture, computer posture, driving posture, walking posture, etc. Our bodies are only designed for walking, running, and lying down. This means anytime you sit or jog you are damaging your spinal column. Think about your day. How many hours a day are you annoying your spine, spinal musculature, and nervous system?

Number 2, lack of stretching. Remember the old adage, if you don’t use it you’ll lose it? This could not be more true for the joints of our spine. Each vertebral joint moves in 14 different directions. Think about the 24 vertebra in your spine, how many times a day, week, month, year, or even decade, do you think you put them through their full range of motion? Lack of use causes the joints to decay. This decay over time will become symptomatic.

Chiropractic restores mobility to the spine, BUT that mobility is limited to the amount of decay present in the joint. Take charge of your health; make a conscious effort to use good posture and do a daily stretching routine. These 2 things are the simplest, (cheapest) and most effective things you can do to keep a healthy, beautiful spine.
